James Daniel Jr.

Career: Educator
James Daniel has been at the helm of the Phoebus High School Basketball program since
2005. Prior to becoming the head coach at Phoebus, Coach Daniel worked as an assistant
coach for the Christopher Newport University Lady Captains. He also served as an assistant coach at Bethel High School. During his tenure at CNU, the Lady Captains took first place in the Dixie Conference and he coached Karen Barefoot, an All-American guard. As an assistant at Bethel, the Bruins won a state championship and produced All-American point guard/NBA Star Allen Iverson.
At Phoebus, Coach Daniel has helped numerous players attend Division 1, Division 2, and
Division 3 programs. His direction for his program has been steadfast. His student-athletes are able to attend college and play on the next level because, he promotes both academic achievement and sports excellence. The program is structured to encourage academics, hard work, sportsmanship and teamwork. Last season Coach Daniel had 100% achievement in sending the seniors to college. In the last 7 years every player that has played for Coach Daniel is now playing at either Professional level, Jr. College, Division I, Division II or Division III School. Coach Daniel has developed and Coach his son James III who became the leading scorer in the Nation at Howard University and Troy Williams who eventually played in the NBA.
In his free time, Daniel serves the community in many ways. Coach Daniel is the founder
and owner of the company, "Ball-Up (BU) Academy". He has given numerous clinics and has helped many students succeed on and off the court.
Coach Daniel attended Stonewall Jackson High School, and St. Leo College, where he earned his BA, and he attended Strayer University, where he earned his MBA.
He currently works for Enterprise Academy in Newport News helping young people to
understand their purpose and desire.
Coach Daniel and his Wendy his wife have five children: Carmen, Breon, James III, Brice and Christopher.
